Biography

Origin

Joseph Morse was born on September 26, 1649 at Dedham, Massachusetts, the son of Joseph Morse and Hannah Phillips of Medfield,[1] was born on Sept. 26, 1649 (p. 111).v[2] (p. 4) [3] [4]

His birth was recorded in the Dedham Records.

1649: Joseph, the son of Joseph and Annis Morse was borne the 26th of the 7 mo. (p. 4). [3] Positions and Property

  • Capt. Morse led the early patriot settlers of Sherborn and Medfield against the Indians. (p. 172), and signed the petition for the incorporation of Sherborn in 1674 and was among the first received as inhabitants.[4]

He was chosen Captain of their only Militia Company, one to treat with a minister to settle in Sherborn to build a parsonage to preserve order and obedience to laws. He personally commanded in the conflicts with the Indians in 1675/6. [1]

Capt. Morse was also chosen to moderate Town Meetings, served as Selectman, was a representative of Sherborn in the General Court at Boston. He was chosen to locate roads and divide the common lands, and his name very often appears subscribed to important documents. [1]

Death and Legacy

Capt. Joseph Morse died February 19, 1718, and was buried in the Morse Lot, Holliston Cemetery. [4] His remains were interred upon an eminence in the ancient Burying Ground in the south part of Sherborn. (p. 20) (p. 10) [1]

Inscription: Hon Joseph Morse Born Sept 26 1649 Died Feb 19 1717-18 His heroic courage and military skill Placed him among the foremost defenders Of the infant Colony From the wily and relentless savage Eminently wise in counsel And of sterling integrity A just and God fearing man He was a chosen leader in affairs of CHURCH and STATE To perpetuate his Memory So deserving the respect and imitation Of his descendants This tablet is by one of them erected A. D. 1879 [5] King Phillip's War

He was a distinguished Indian fighter as well as a prominent citizen in Civil life.

February 21, 1675/6: Capt. Morse was called into action when Medfield, assaulted by Philip at the head of five hundred warriors laid in ashes and eighteen persons massacred. He was at his remote settlement with his wife and her sister in law, whose husband, being on the other side of the river, fell the first victim to the fierce tomahawk. Mrs. Morse lost her child, and her sister in law being pregnant and in confinement died. The two or three garrisons of Boggestow consisted of only about ten or twelve men each.

The Indian warriors deferred their attack on Boggestow until May 6, when they met the notorious repulse at the stone house at Boggestow Pond.

On July 2,1676, there was a new conflict in the nearby forest. So vigorous was Captain Morse's attack, that a large number of the enemy were killed, and the rout was so complete, and the chastisement so severe, that the Indians never dared to show their faces in that vicinity again." (p. 19) [1]
