  • *******Joseph was a Captain in the Spotsylvania Militia in 1750. Joseph Collins, Gentleman, was commissioned lieutenant of a troop of horse under Captain Joseph Hawkins and took his oath 6 December 1743. He also took his oath as captain of a troop of horse 6 November 1750. One author writes that this Collins family was "among the great families, the landed gentry of Virginia. "Essex Co., VA, May 16, 1737. Joseph Collins, planter, sold to Nicholas Pampline 200 acres in Essex & King & Queen Co. for ??60 & 2000 lbs. tobacco. Wife Susannah didn't relinquish dower right till June 19, 1739. Made his will in Spotsylvania Co., VA, proved Nov. 1, 1757. His executors were sons John, James, William, Thomas, and Lewis Collins. A legacy is mentioned to granddaughter, Amey Collins, Wife Susannah, who was to have real and personal estate until her re-marriage. At that time the estate was to be sold and money divided between sons James, William, Thomas, and Lewis, and daughters Ann Wisdom, Mary Brockman, Drucilla Cook and Caty Glass. Benjamin Glaze is mentioned in the will of Joseph Collin's brother Thomas, along with brother-in-law, which, with other evidence, is fairly conclusive that Benjamin Glaze's wife was Catherine Collins.
