Born at Huntington, Suffolk, NY to Jonathan Brush and Elizabeth Smith.

He fought at the Battle of Bennington 16 Aug 1777 in Capt. Samuel Robinson's company. From Castleton, Vt., came Josiah Brush, who made the first settlement upon the farm later owned by Perry Cook, where he kept a hotel 30 years (History of Fairfax). The first single wagon was brought into town in 1808 by Josiah Brush. He ordered his 5 sons (Joshua, Smith, Josiah, Epenetus and Jonathan) to enlist into the War of 1812 which they obeyed and served with honor. (Vermont Gazette).
