JOSIAH RYLAND JR., DEAD

Virginia's Second Auditor Passes Away After a Short Illness

Was a Gallant Confederate Soldier and a Christian Gentleman

Captain Josiah Ryland, Jr., second Auditor of Virginia, died at his home, in Richmond city, yesterday at half past eleven o'clock, after a brief illness of only two weeks. He had been ill, but last Wednesday was out of his room, and his many friends hoped he was on the road to complete recovery. He suffered a relapse, however, and died yesterday of pneumonia complicated with heart trouble. His remains will be taken to his old home, Bruington.

SKETCH OF HIS LIFE

Captain Ryland was Second Auditor of Virginia. He was born in King and Queen county, July 25, 1838. He was educated at the Virginia Military Institute, graduating in 1859. He was a classmate of Gen. Scott Shipp, present superintendent of the V. M. I., and of Colonel Cutshaw, City Engineer of Richmond. He served during the war between the States as a captain in the artillery which he organized in King and Queen county, and later joined the Ninth Virginia Cavalry, the Lee Rangers, serving without commission in that regiment throughout the war. His record was brilliant. While in the war he was married to Miss Lucy White, of King and Queen, who died last year, and three sons and two daughters survive him -- Lucian White Ryland, Alexander Ryland, of the First National Bank, in Richmond, and Edward Ryland, at present a cadet at his father's alma mater; Mrs. Thos. W. Gardner and Miss Mary Ryland, of Barton Heights.

APPOINTED AS AUDITOR

Capt. Ryland was superintendent of schools in King and Queen county for several years, and had taught school in his native county before he received appointment in 1884 as Funding Clerk in the office of the Second Auditor of Virginia. June 6, 1892, Governor Philip W. McKinney appointed him Second Auditor to succeed Colonel Frank G. Ruffin, who died suddenly. Since his appointment he served continuously as Second Auditor without absence from his duties. He was a member of the Barton Heights Baptist Church and was clerk of the Dover Association of the Baptist Church. His services to the church have been faithful.

He was the son of Joseph Ryland (1813-1872) and Priscilla Courtney Bagby (1818-1888), of 'Marlborough.' He preferred to be called "Pat."

Josiah Ryland went home on leave to marry Lucy White (1841-1900), on February 25, 1864. He was still on leave, married less than a week, when called out to take part in the skirmish at Dahlgren's Corner.* Reference: Find A Grave Memorial - SmartCopy: Aug 9 2021, 22:17:07 UTC
