Nathan Davis was on the staff of General George Washington. He moved to West Union in 1801 and donated the Square in West Union to Doddridge County in 1845. At that time, there was a fine, brick house upon it that was used for the first Court House in the County. The present one is the fourth built on the same site. A plat of the town as laid out by Captain Davis may be found in the County Clerk's Office, in Deed Book One, Page 23.
