About Capt. Nathan Palmer

HISTORY OF THE TOWN OF STONINGTON, County of New London, Connecticut, from its first settlement in 1649 to 1900, by Richard Anson Wheeler, New London, CT, 1900, p. 515

GEDCOM Note

Research on the lineage of Nathan Palmer, Jr.: a) Betty Ruppert didn’t know the lineage of Nathan Palmer. One possible lineage for him is through Walter (1), Deacon Gershom (2), George (3), Dr. Joseph (4) Palmer who married Zipperah Billings; he would be a brother to Gershom Palmer, b. 1800. (A Modern History of New London County, Conn., v. 2, p. 159) Betty, however, didn’t think this was our Nathan’s lineage. Probate Estate Records, File # 2508 of Nathan Palmer, Jr. lists a “Salloma” Palmer as widow. This N. Palmer is referred to as Capt. N. Palmer. According to Probate papers, it would seem that Capt. Nathan Palmer, Jr., who died in 1791 and left a widow named Silloma (Salloma), was the father of Nathan Billings Palmer. Capt. Nathan Palmer, Jr. seems to have been involved in shipping.

Revolutionary War Service: Feb. 23, 1775--Maj. Smith of Stonington asked for more men; Nathan Palmer, Jr. appointed 1st Lieutenant; July 2, 1776--Nathan Palmer appointed Captain of the Company; Feb. 15, 1777--Gov. & Council sent for Capts. W. Ledyard of Groton & N. Palmer to consult about raising artillery companies; Mar. 20, 1777--Capt. Palmer was directed to purchase 20,000 weight of cheese; Mar. 26, 1777--Capt. Palmer seized 11,618 pounds of cheese; May 12, 1777--Capt. Palmer was directed to remove public stores at Stonington to safety.
