"In the mid-1600's, John Gore and James Gore came to America from Ireland. John settled in Massachusetts and James in what is now Prince George's Co., Maryland. In 1711 and 1714, James Gore obtained land grants from the Colonial Government of Maryland for land on Rock Creek and Piney Branch, which is now almost in the middle of Washington, DC, and for other land on the Potomac River."
