Capt. Co C 93 Pa Vet Inf.
The son of Jacob & Elizabeth Snavely, he married Mary Alice Dasher August 24, 1859, in Hummelstown, Dauphin County, Pennsylvania, and fathered Minnie (b. 05/11/66 - married George E. Ware), Anna B. (b. 09/06/69 - married Charles E. Baumbach), Charles (b. 09/10/71), and Effie (b. @1876). In 1860, he was a furnace engineer living with his bride in South Hanover Township, Dauphin County, and stood 5' 7" tall with black hair and gray eyes.
A Civil War veteran, he enlisted in Lebanon September 12, 1861, mustered into federal service there October 12 as a private with Co. D, 93rd Pennsylvania Infantry, and promoted to 1st sergeant, date as yet unknown. On November 28, 1864, he transferred to Co. C, promoted to captain to date January 2, 1865, and honorably discharged with his company June 27, 1865. His obituary in the Lancaster News-Journal clams that after serving with the 93rd Pennsylvania, "he was assigned to the First Brigade," proving that the author of that statement didn't have a clue as to military organization. In March 1864, the regiment was reassigned to the 1st Brigade, 2nd Division, 6th Corps, merely the last of five organizations to which it was assigned during its existence.
He died at his home from a "hemorrhage [of the] middle meningeal artery" with "senility" a contributing factor.* Reference: Find A Grave Memorial - SmartCopy: Sep 28 2023, 3:45:34 UTC
