About Capt. Richard Clarke, (CSA)
Richard Clarke, a wealthy physician, owned a cotton plantation near Uniontown, Perry County, Alabama. He fought briefly in the Civil War, serving as the captain of a regiment he organized called the Canebrake Rifle Guards, until he was wounded in battle. By the end of the Civil War, the family was suffering financially; Clarke sold the plantation in 1865 and set up a medical practice in Selma, Dallas County, Alabama.
