About Capt. Robert Lanier Daniel, Justice of Pitt Co,
Recipient of a petition from the Machapunga Tribe. He was born to a Barbados/NC trade family and was born in Chowan District, N. C. and died in Pitt County after Sept. 14, 1782. In the Tax list of 1755, in Pitt County, he is listed with two slaves; William Daniel living with Ebenezer Folsom, two slaves; and Aaron Daniel living with Richard Grist, three slaves. From 1765 through 1768, Robert Lanier Daniel was a Justice of Pitt County. In the 7 Years War, records show him in a company of Pitt County 1766, one of eight Companies of Foot and he is shown as Commander of the Sixth Company. Most of the records of Pitt County have been lost or burned, and the few scattered papers are now in the State Department of Archives and History in Raleigh, N. C. There are two early deed books. Book G records on Aug. 6, 1783, two grants for Robert Lanier Daniel, one of 500 acres and the other of 560 acres, both north of the Tar River. At the same time George Daniel received 535 acres, also north of the Tar River.
