About Capt. Robert Elmer Mayes
http://listsearches.rootsweb.com/th/read/TNSMITH/2001-07/0996444610
Confederate officer from either Sumner or Robertson County, Tennessee. Enlisted in October, 1861. Captured sick at the surrender of Fort Donelson, Tennessee, on February 16, 1862. Sent as a POW to Camp Chase, Ohio, and then to Johnson's Island, Sandusky Bay, Ohio, where he died. Sources conflict as to disposition of his remains. The U.S. War Dept. reported in 1912 that Grave 101 in the Confederate Cemetery is his final resting place, but a local source in Tennessee stated that the body was sent to Paducah, Kentucky. Also, the War Dept. showed the date of death as 9/10/1863, rather than the far more realistic date supplied by the local source of May 11, 1862.
