He lived in West Chester, Province of New York. He joined the British soon after the Battle of Long Island serving under Col. Robert Rogers in the Queen's Rangers in 1776. The next Summer he joined the Corps of West Chester Loyalists under Col. DeLancey and served with then until November 1779. His Excellency Governor Tryon honored him with a Commission as Lieutenant in a Troop of Horse. In 1780 he succeeded to the Command of said Troop and had charge of same during the War. At the close of the War he emigrated to Nova Scotia in 1783 settling in Cumberland County.
Samuel left New York the 1st of June 1783, with a party of the regiment of Westchester Light Horse who were under the direction of Captain Moses Knapp. They went to the County of Cumberland. Samuel settled at Remsheg, (Wallace today), Nova Scotia.

This list indicates he left alone for exile. His first family stayed in the new Republic.
Shortly after his marriage to Mary Knapp, they migrated to Lower Canada.
