SAWTELLE 5 ELWELL (1742— )

Sawtelle5 Elwell, born October 17, 1742, died after October 13, 1797, son of John4, married (1) Margaret Elwell, a cousin, daughter of one Richard Elwell. He wed (2), before October 1788, Mary Cade, widow of Dr. Aaron Friend Cade (Orphans Court record Gloucester County in which Elwell has been copied as Huell). Dr. Cade died in 1785 (NJA 35:68).

Sawtelle was a Captain in the Revolution.

He was a witness to the will of Jacob Elwell, dated Sept. 13, 1773 (NJA 39:152). Note a. He signed the petition of Robert Whitaker for an inn (Pine Tavern) in Woolwich Township, Gloucester County, June 10, 1766 or 1776 (NJSP 1929:66; CSB 142).

After August 2, 1775, and before Jan. 31, 1784, Sawtelle bought a grist mill from the estate of William Morgan of Gloucester County. John Nelson witnessed the Morgan will (NJA 34:357; 35:281). Sawtelle Elwell, Esq. of Woolwich Twp., and "Margret," his wife, on Jan. 31, 1784, sold to Josiah, Foster, Esq., 120 acres partly in Salem and partly in Gloucester Counties, with grist mill, dwelling, barns, etc. Abraham Nelson, Jr., et al were witnesses (aiD A:121; SaD A:9). He received damage from refugees before Oct. 6, 1779 (OGC 31296). He was a bondsman in the estate of Andrew Richman June 17, 1782 (NJA 35:326); and he was a witness April 24, 1790 (NJA 36:90). Before 1816, he sold (no date given) with wife, Mary, to Samuel Nelson a half interest in 17.20 acres (mill pond, etc.) (AN 32; SaD 7:257).

In 1790, Sawtelle made two mortgages covering 82 acres where he dwelt, of the plantation in Salem County, of which was devised to him by his father, John (A:213, 216). He signed a petition October 13, 1797, hence died after that date (NJA 38:121). No record of his estate has been found in NJA or in Salem, Gloucester, or Cumberland Counties.

Sawtelle5 apparently had children: Abigail, who wed Samuel Sarish Dec. 19, 1792; Cameliel, who burned to death while young; Gameliel? died young; William; Mary who died young of smallpox (EA 40, 41).

Abigail6 had a child, Abigail, born March 31, 1814, who wed (1) Elijah Richman, and (2) Norton Nicholls. A child, Achsah Richman, married John Krom (EA 41).
