Research Notes
Shubeal's name is spelled Shubael in many of the records, however the grave marker has "Shubeal" on it so we will accept that.
Biography
Shubeal was born 14 Aug 1773[1]on Martha's Vineyard. He was the son of Peter and Hannah (Cottle) West.[2]
He married first Marcy Edmondson,[2] The couple may have had seven children. She died on 28 Jun 1824.[2]
Shubeal was a noted sea captain, having built and sailed a couple of his own sloops. One, the Primrose, went into service in 1811 when he began sailing from Hallowell to Boston, carrying flour, brass kettles, run, molasses, coffee and wine to be sold at West’s Wharf in the “Joppa” section of Hallowell.[3]It was because of his fine reputation that he gave believable testimony before a justice of the peace in Kennebec County Maine, stating that he and most of his crew saw a large sea serpent attack and kill a humpback whale.[4]
He married, secondly, Naomi Luce, 29 Nov 1824 in Hallowell, ME.[5] Naomi passed away two days before their seventh anniversary.[6]
He passed away 7 Feb 1833. He is buried in the Village Cemetery in Hallowell.[2]
