Civil War Veteran - Capt. Spencer Roane Thorpe served in a Kentucky Regiment under the command of Gen. John Hunt Morgan, CSA. during the Civil War.
According to his Obituary, Los Angeles Herald, September 5, 1905, Capt. Thorpe served 4 years in the Confederate Army in a Regt. under Gen. Morgan and took part in the battles of Manassas (Bull Run), Shiloh and Murfreesboro and other notable engagements. He was seriously wounded 3 times and following the battle at Corydon, IN, he was left for dead on the field; taken as a prisoner & held at Johnson's Island.
Capt. Thorpe remained active in veteran's activities following the end of the war. He was a member of the United Confederate Veterans and also served as Pacific Coast Div. Commander in that organization.

Spencer Roane Thorpe (1842-1905) was born in Kentucky, 1/20/1842 and graduated from St. Joseph's College, Bardstown, KY. before the outbreak of the Civil War.
Husband of Helena Cecilia Barbin (1850-1935). They married in 1868 and were the parents of 5 children.
After the war, Capt. Thorpe practiced Law at Marksville, Avoyelles Parish, LA (the home of his wife's family) where he accumulated a fortune. In 1883, they moved to Los Angeles, CA
Capt. Thorpe was twice a Member of the Board of Police Commissioners and a former Police Commissioner under the administrations of Mayor M.P. Snyder.
Capt. Thorpe was also a member of the Sons of the American Revolution, being a direct descendant of Patrick Henry.
He also engaged in farming on a large scale; owning extensive properties in both Los Angeles & Ventura Counties.
It was while visiting one of those properties that he died of heart disease and found along the side of a road in Ventura County. He was buried in Calvary Cemetery, Los Angeles, CA. Capt. Thorpe was 63 years of age at his death.
