About Carolyn Holmes

Things started out for me after World War II. During the War, dad proudly served in the US Navy in "Lighter Than Air", doing aerial submarine surveillance in blimps between Lakehurst, NJ and Havana, Cuba. Before I was born, dad opted to go into the Naval Reserves and moved from his last duty station in Corpus Christi, Texas; returning home to Tuscaloosa, Alabama where he could continue his college education and I was born.

From Tuscaloosa it was on to Birmingham in Alabama, then on to Memphis, TN where we were twice neighbors of Elvis Presley, then on to Sanford, NC for High School and then on to College.

After College, an opportunity opened for me to share expenses with my cousin in Hawaii, while her husband served in Vietnam for a year, compliments of the US Army. (I often refer to this time period as my 1st lifetime).

My years in Hawaii were special. Those cultural lessons learned have been invaluable to me over time. During those 8 years, I married my 1st husband; had 2 beautiful children (a son & a daughter) and then that chapter closed. My children & I moved back to the mainland (or the land of the BIG PX, as the islanders call it).

(This is the beginning of my 2nd lifetime). My children & I established roots in Birmingham, Al, which was also the home of my parents at that time. I met & married my 2nd husband in 1979. We are still happily married after raising those two children, seeing them graduate from their respective High Schools and on to the next chapters of their young lives. Our son pursued a military career after High School and graduated from College after discharge from the US Air Force. Our daughter chose a different path in life, not bad, just different. Our children have Blessed us with 3 beautiful grandchildren, who are all now grown & in their 20's.

My husband & I relocated to Northern VA in 1997. These have been some of the most productive & rewarding years of our lives. I retired from Fairfax County Dept. of Planning & Zoning in 2015 and have been immersed in the pursuit of my ancestral family ever since. This incredible family of mine has been fascinating to learn about.
