He was the eldest son and heir of Arthur Smyth of Blackmore--he inherited Blackmore at his father's death in 1623.
"He married Jane, daughter of Thomas Bennett, alderman of London, and had Arthur, his son and heir, aged 22 in 1664; Henry who died the 22nd of December, 1671, aged 28; Stephen who died 14 March, 1672, aged 23; and Thomas the 23rd of May 1684, aged 34. His other children were: Dorothy; Margaret; Nicholas; Joanna who married Nicholas Alexander; Bennett who died a child, and Christian. Thomas who died in 1684 had a daughter who married William Tendring. When his male heirs failed in 1724 Blackmore passed to the Tendrings."
