About Capt. (USA), Frederick Zarracher

Captain, Company C, 18th Pennsylvania Cavalry. Served as Captain, Company H, 29th Pennsylvania Infantry from July 5, 1861 until his resignation on April 7, 1863 due to poor health (chronic rheumatism). He went home for a year to recover and secured a commission as Captain, Company C, 18th Pennsylvania Cavalry to replace James Captain Hughes. Severely wounded in the left leg and pinned under his horse and was captured at Mine Run, Virginia, on May 5, 1864. Held captive in Columbia Military Prison, Columbia, South Carolina. Released, and was among 600 Union officers who arrived at Annapolis, Maryland on March 6, 1865. Mustered out as Captain, Company C, 3rd Provisional Cavalry on October 31, 1865. Also listed as Garracher.

Born in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. Filed for a pension on August 6, 1869, application number 146,639, certificate number 108,166.
