About Capt. William Barrett, of James City
William and Mary Quartearly, V. 7, Series 1, pg. 202 Title: Capt. William Barrett of James City County, dead before 1677 when his "son and heir" James Barrett (and Mary his wife) made a deed to Major William White of said county
GEDCOM Note
The Lists of the Living and Dead in Virginia, as of 16 Feb 1623/24, includes a William Barrett at "Flourdieu Hundred" -- one of 66 persons, including 4 women and several "Negors." (Hotten p 172) There were 1277 persons total on this list. Presumably Flourdieu Hundred is Flowerdew Hundred, 1000 acres owned by Sir George Yeardley and sold by him in 1624. This was on the south side of the James River, maybe 20 miles above the Chickahominy. Marked as an historic site in the Delorme Atlas, p 49 B-5. There is a University Press of VA book, published 1995, FLOWERDEW HUNDRED: The Archealogy of a Virginia Plantation, by James Deetz. The lists available from the Muster taken in early 1624/25 have 2 other Barretts -- Francis at Hogg Island and Walter at Elizabeth City -- but apparently not a William; the Muster included persons who died in 1624, so perhaps he was just missed, either in the muster or the transcription. However, Jester in writing ADVENTURERS does not show any descendants of these early Barretts.
A William Barrett was Burgess for James City County 1644/45 and October 1646. Dates from McIlwaine list published at www.rootsweb.com/~vajamesc/.
The Barrett lineage information is from a handwritten tree found in LAW's notebook on the Edloe family.
