William Bedlow (1722–1798) served as a captain and and commissioner of building fortifications in 1775, and as a construction supervisor of obstructions in the Hudson River in 1777. A former sea captain and merchant, Bedlow became postmaster of New York in 1784. He may have retained his post since Samuel Osgood wrote him as late as 23 Feb. 1790 concerning his accounts (DNA: RG 28, Letters Sent By the Postmaster General, 1789–1836). ~• from: http://founders.archives.gov/documents/Washington/05-04-02-0062
