Salem County hero in the Revolutionary War skirmish at Quinton's Bridge. He was Captain of the Lower County of Foot Mlitia in Upper Alloway Creek Township in the Eastern Battalion of the County of Salem. For an account of his heroic actions see "Salem County in the Revolution" by Frank H. Stewart.
Capt. William Smith's plantation which still exists, is situated in what is now Quinton Twp., on the roa fro the Bridgeton Pike to Jericho, below what was , in Revolutioary times, known as Tattletown. The farm is owned and occupied by the widow of a descendent of Capt. William - Mrs. C. Lester Cain.
