Alanson Eldredge was born in Mansfield, CT to Micah and Anna Hanks Eldredge. His father was a Revolutionary soldier. Alanson married Esther Sunderlin in Middletown, VT on 8 September 1803. Together they had ten children, 4 of whom died young. The family moved to New York where Esther died in 1823. Alanson took his children to Indiana where he was converted to the LDS church in 1836. Sometime after his conversion he moved to Caldwell County, Missouri, then to Nauvoo, IL. He moved west to Salt Lake with his son Ira in 1847 at the age of 65. Alanson had a tannery in the Valley and lived in Sugar House.
