About Captain Caleb Hamblin
Caleb Hamblin's son Caleb said, "My grandfather Benjamin, spelled his name Hamblen, and my father did the same, until Mr. Otis Crocker from Barnstable, came to Falmouth to teach school, who taught us to spell the name Hamblin, and after repeated arguments convinced my father it was right. We have since spelled the name that way. I have several old family deeds in the house, belonging to my grandfather in which the name is uniformly spelled Hamblen" [Andrews, 1902, p. 560].
Caleb Hamblin was a master mariner who lived at Snake Pond, Sandwich, MA [Andrews, 1902, p. 560]. Methodist [Andrews, 1902, p. 560]. Democrat [Andrews, 1902, p. 560].
His last voyage was in a merchant ship to Cuba, 1824 [Andrews, 1902, p. 560]. On the return, at the Isle of Pines, he was chased by Spanish pirates [Andrews, 1902, p. 560]. He eluded them in the darkness by changing his course and putting out his lights [Andrews, 1902, p. 560]. After this he was induced to remain at home with his father who deeded his farm to him [Andrews, 1902, p. 560].
He lost his health fighting fire in the great fire which raged over Cape Cod about 1843 [Andrews, 1902, p. 560].
