Charles was the third son of William Fulllerton Elphinstone. Died unmarried.
After beginning a successful naval career, Capt. Charles Elphinstone was returning home from India aboard the H.M.S. Blenheim, when she was lost in a hurricane, which started January 31st 1807; the Blenheim was lost off the east coast of India in the neighborhood of Madras. He left a detailed will, made in 1806. Many distinguished officers and seamen were aboard at the time including Admiral Sir Thomas Troubridge, Mr. Secretary Harvey, and nine lieutenants. Others included George, Lord Rosehill, the eldest son of William, 7th Earl of Northesk (age 16), and two sons of the Duke of Clarence.
