Born around 1655 in South River Hundred, Capt. Edward Burges went with his father Col. William Burges to Maryland and later in the expedition against the Nanticoke Indians in 1676 and was active in Indian warfare. By 1689 he was addressed as "Captain of the Foote." He was commissioned a Gentleman Justice of Pease for Anne Arundel County on June 6, 1679 and was a member of the Quorum and was appointed a member of the commission to "survey and manage he building of the court house" in 1683, "Captain of the Foote." He married Sarah, the daughter of Samuel and Anne (Ayres) Chew.
When the Church of England became the State Church of Maryland, he was appointed vestryman of South River & All Hallow's Parish. After July 26, 1676, he married Sarah Chew. Children of Edward & Sarah: Edward, Elizabeth, Anne, William, John, Samuel, Margaret, Sarah, and Susanna. George Puddington bequeathed 245 acres of land in his will to Edward Burgess. His daughter, Elizabeth, married William Nicholson on Aug. 15, 1704. All Hallow's Church records state he was buried March 4, 1722/3.
His will was dated Aug. 29, 1721 and was probated March 14, 1722/3. His personal estate was inventory was filed April 6, 1723. "To wife Sarah, the dwelling plantation "Burgess his Rite" during life, and 1/3 personal estate absolutely; residue to child. equally.
Margaret Ware, 15 A. nr. Home Cove during life. 100 A. on Scotch Ck. to be sold for benefit od estate. to their daughter Margaret Ware during life only.
sons Samuel and John, residue of lands; after decease of sd. Samuel and Elizabeth his wife, son Samuel's portion to their child. Edward, Benjamin and Elizabeth. Son John's wife Jane to have life interest in his portion; he dying without issue, to pass to rest of testator's child.
