About Captain George Stirling of Glorat, younger, M.C.

CAPTAIN GEORGE A. M. STIRLING OF GLORAT, YOUNGER, M.C. (1915-41)

Captain George A. M. Stirling of Glorat is the youngest son of Sir George Murray Home Stirling of Glorat, Baronet, and his wife, Mabel Elizabeth Sprott, Lady Stirling of Glorat. He was born on 10 March 1915 The-VC-and DSO-Volume-II, page 129 and died at Cairo in Egypt on 14 December 1941, of wounds received in action. He was posthumously awarded the Military Cross Glasgow Herald, Thursday March 4, 1943

Posthumous Award of the Military Cross

The citation of the award of the Military Cross to Captain Stirling reads as follows:

"On November 21, 1941, Captain Stirling, as adjutant of the battalion, displayed conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty on the attack on Tiger from the Tobruk perimeter, until, seriously wounded for the second time, he was evacuated. On the intermediate objective of Jill he was wounded on the leg on a minefield which destroyed his vehicle, but proceeded gallantly on foot organising and leading officerless parties of the forward troops in the later attack on the final objective. Captain Stirling's fearless dash and determination in this coordination of effort was vital in maintaining the impetus of the attack when the heavy casualties had removed so many leaders. On nearing Tiger he was seriously wounded again by machine-gun fire". The Glasgow Herald, Thursday March 4, 1943
