About Captain Hon. Thomas Kenelm Digby St. Lawrence

Thomas Kenelm Digby St. Lawrence was born on December 12, 1855, the only son of Sir Thomas St. Lawrence, KP (Baron Howth, Viscount St. Lawrence, and 3rd Earl of Howth), and educated at Harrow. On April 1, 1876, he entered Militia service, and was commissioned a Sub-Lieutenant in The King’s Own Royal Tower Hamlets, transferring to the Westmeath Militia on December 20. On November 10, 1877, he entered the British Army as a 2nd Lieutenant, and was gazetted to the 5th (Princess Charlotte of Wales’) Dragoon Guards. For the next five years, he served at stations in England, including Aldershot and Leeds. He was promoted to Lieutenant on August 21, 1878, and served throughout the Egyptian Campaign of 1882 attached to the 4th (Royal Irish) Dragoon Guards, including at Tel-el-Kebir, September 13, 1882. He was entitled to wear the Egyptian War Medal with Clasp, and the Khedive’s Bronze Star. St. Lawrence was promoted to Captain on December 19, 1883. Upon his return to Great Britain, he served at various home stations, including leading troops at the Belfast riots in August, 1886. On April 22, 1891, he was placed on temporary half-pay due to illness, and died 16 days later of typhoid fever. He was interred in the chancellery of the Old Church, St. Mary’s Abbey, Howth.
