About Captain James Macdonald of Flodigarry
James Macdonald of Flodigarry, fourth son, was born at Flodigarry, Isle of Skye, Scotland, November 30, 1757.
When seventeen years of age, on his way to America with his parents, he received his baptism of fire when the emigrant ship "Baliol" was attacked by a French Privateer. Too young to become involved in the affair of Moore's Creek Bridge, February 27, 1776, he stayed in America after his parents returned to Skye and obtained a Commission as Lieutenant in Tarlton's British Legion in which he "served with distinction" from its arrival in South Carolina in 1779 to its surrender at Yorktown in 1781.
He was severely wounded at the Battle of Camden on August 16, 1780. He retired on half pay as a Captain and returned to Scotland and Skye in1784.
In 1788 he took over Flodigarry, and was IX of Kingsburgh. Captain James Macdonald of Flodigarry was extremely popular in Skye. In 1791 he married Emily, daughter of James Macdonald of Skaebost, with issue. He died in 1807.
