35735. James Phelps. Born on 27 May 1732 in Middletown, CT.

From The Phelps Family of America:260

(#469) Capt. James Phelps, b. Hebron, Ct., 1732, m. Rebecca Curtis, 21 Feb., 1760, in Kent, Ct., by Rev. Sylvanus Osborn.
Capt. Phelps resided for a time in Kent, Ct,, where one of his children was born, removing to Southwick, Mass., where he died 10 Mar., 1831, in his 99th year. Says a descendant of this family, “He served in the French war and also in the Revolutionary war. He was Capt. in the French war of 1755, commanding a company of 96 men, and in the battle of Quebec, I think, he was severely wounded. After the battle only fourteen could be counted in his company. There were a number of Phelps’s in his company.” Says another descendant of this family, Louis Phelps, “When I was a boy, I think in 1826, a brother of my grandfather paid my father a visit, a fine looking old gentleman, supposed to be nearly 100 years old. He had regained his second sight and could see to read the finest print, but could not hear a word. He attended church with us and remarked to my father, ‘That was an excellent sermon. I know it was good from the manners and gestures of the minister.’ He was a captain in the French war.”
   Child:
   i. Elisha, b. Kent, Ct., 5 Mar., 1763. Probably others. On 21 Feb 1760 when James was 27, he married Rebecca Curtis, daughter of Deodatus Curtis (5 Mar 1706-) & Elizabeth Selden (9 Feb 1712/3-), in Kent, CT. Born on 12 Jan 1739/40 in Kent, CT.
