Biography
Some records indicate that Captain Joseph Bean was the son of Lewis Bane and Mary Mills. According to Wiliamson [reference below], "Joseph Bane, of the same place and probably a kindred, or brother, born in 1676, was taken by the Indians in [January 25] 1692, and detained a captive among them, seven years and ten months. During his captivity, he traveled with them extensively over the country, and learned to speak their language with so much facility, as to render him exceedingly useful afterwards as an interpreter. His return home was not till after the close of the second Indian war." [1699]
In 1703, Joseph married Johana Freethy (Freethee? Treethy?) Joseph was granted 400 acres in Sanford. At Richmond Fort 1735 (Deeds XVII-181). Left an estate in Scituate section of York. (Deeds 34-151 (1761). Joseph and Johana had ten children.
Joseph was an interpreter, highly regarded by both Indians and Mass. authorities. He was pensioned for war service wounds, which included the loss of a thumb and three fingers, in action.
Joseph died in 1755, probably in York, Maine, though he had moved to Falmouth for a time after his retirement from military service at Fort Saint George, Maine in 1753. It seems conclusive that this was only a short time until he was back in York. [1]
