About Captain Leander C Owen
Capt. L. C. Owen commanded the steam whaler, Mary and Helen, the first used in the whole fishery, sailing from New Bedford, Mass., September 27, 1880, for the Arctic Ocean and in one season captured twenty-seven whales. In 1882 he was in command of the steam whaler, North Star, on her first voyage when she was crushed in the ice, of Point Barrow, July 4, 1882.
