Biography

Nehemiah Cushing was the eldest son of the Honorable Theophilus Cushing and Mary Thaxter . He was born on 18 July 1689 in Hingham, Massachusetts.[1][2] [3]

On 19 March 1711, he married Sarah Nichols, daughter of Nathaniel Nichols and Sarah Lincoln, in Hingham, Massachusetts.[1] Nehemiah and Sarah had seven children.

Nehemiah settled in Pembroke MA in 1711, and had a tannery there. In 1712 the first Town meeting was held in Pembroke, and he was chosen Collector of Town Rates, and Surveyor of Highways. [2]

On January 3, 1718 his father signed a will in which Nehemiah was mentioned.
To Nehemiah (besides that which I have already given him.) all that my lot of land (excepting two acres of the Cedar Swamp that lyes on the Northerly part of said Lot, lying and being in the share in the Township of Abington in the county of Plymouth, and is commonly known by the name of Pole Swamp. And I likewise do remit, release and give back to my said son, all that money which is due to me from me by any bill, or bond, whatsoever. [4] His father died on January 7, 1718. His mother married Joseph Herrick in December of 1722 and she and his two youngest sisters relocated to Beverly, Essex County, Massachusetts Bay.

March 1719 Nehemiah was chosen Town Treasurer and served until 1724. In May 1722 he was representative to the General Court at Boston and served as coroner in 1739 and 1762.[2]

In 1720, the town of Scituate granted Joseph Barstow and Benjamin Stetson, two acres of land between Pine Hill and Rocky Run for the erection of a "forge and finery." Before the forge was constructed Mr. Stetson conveyed one half of his share to Nehemiah Cushing and Mr. Barstow conveyed half of his share to Thomas Barden. The forge was constructed before 1725. [5]

Nehemiah owned a saw-mill on Pleasant street (then in the town of Hanover), near the West Hanover depot. Traditionally called "Elihab's mill," because it was at one time owned by Elihab (or Eliab) Studley. In a deed on January, 1724, he mentioned that it was property he had gotten from his father. It was uncertain how old the mill was but likely not more than ten years. Nehemiah sold the mill, and privilege to operate it, in 1728 to Edward Estes. [5]

In a deed also in 1728 Nehemiah Cushing conveyed to Thomas Barden (Plymouth, MA; Book 25, Page 68) " one-fourth part of the new forge, land, and privilege. In this deed, he says that he had made a previous deed to Mr. Bardin, but the deed was in the dwelling house standing on the granted premises, "when the house with the deed therein was burned to ashes, the deed not having been recorded."

His mother signed a will on June 23, 1739 in Beverly. [6] It mentioned " the wife of my son Nehemiah Cushing" without mentioning her by name was to share in Mary's clothing. To the surviving children and grandchildren of her deceased children she left:
All the remainder of my Estate whether money, (Dreley?) bond, silver spoons, linen or other Estate whatsoever...

Following Sarah's death in 1749, Nehemiah married Hannah Loring, widow of Joseph Thomas, on 5 September 1750 in Plympton, Massachusetts. [7]

Nehemiah passed away in Pembroke, Massachusetts on 11 December 1774. He is buried in Center Cemetery in Pembroke, Massachusetts.[8]
