About Captain Obed Obed Nye

A Patriot of the American Revolution for MASSACHUSETTS with the rank of PRIVATE. DAR Ancestor # A085385

Obed Nye ( 1736- 1815) married Mary Sellars( 1739-1797) and they had 12 children. He was a live oak contractor. After Mary died he married Freelove Babcock Maxfield. They both died ( along with his oldest child Jonathan 1760-1815) in the spotted fever epedemic of 1815. This patricular fever struck mostly adults. Obed bought, what he named Nye Farm, from Job and Ezra Winslow in 1771. It was 200 acres on the east side of the road leading from Fairhaven to Acushnut. His son Thomas ( 1789- 1842) inherited the house. Part of the farm was sold to Warren Delano for Riverside cemetery in 1846. The farm was sold out of the family by the heirs of Thomas in 1854.
Obed was called Captain Nye. He defended Fairhaven during the revolutionary war.He owned a merchandise store that was burned down by the British in 1778. He was a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church at Achusnut village.
Obed and Mary's youngest child Jane married Reuben Swift

From the History Of Achshnut by FRANKLIN HOWLAND published in 1907 and also research by Elizabeth Swift wife of Obed Nye Swift (born 1909)

"Obed Nye, the son of Captain Thomas Nye, became a well-known sihipmaster and the owner of 250-acre farm on the road from Fairhaven to Acushnet, Mass. His land was formerly the north third of the Thomas ; Hathaway farm, on the east side of the road. Obed bought it from Job and Ezra Winslow in 1771 and left it to his son Thomas, who owned it until 1854. Built between 1735 and 1737, the house originally had a large central chimney, which was removed in 1888.

During the Revolution Obed served as a marine on the Boston and as a private in the 2d Bristol regiment. later he and his brother Gideon formed a partllership, with at least six ships. The brothers also joined their cousin Jireh Swift in keeping the first store in Acushnet." - LEGENDARY LIVES BY George P. Nye

__________________________

He served as a marine on the frigate "Boston" during the Revolution and later became a shipmaster. His son, Thomas, became a sea captain and then founded a large shipping and whaling firm. Seven family members were either sea captains, ship owners or both. His nephews, Gideon and Obed, were active in the China trade in the firm of Nye & Co. His grandson, Thomas Jr., made his first voyage as master when only eighteen years old and with his brother owned fourteen or more trading vessels. Another grandson, Gideon Nye Jr., weathered the panic of 1837 even though he was involved with three London banks that failed. With his three brothers Gideon then founded the firm Nye, Parkin & Co. He bought an art collection that an Englishman had spent 30-40 years gathering. Later he lost his fortune. Much loved and the oldest foreign resident, he stayed on in China as vice-consul, in the stately official residence until his death in 1888.
