Oscar was a captain on ships and had sailed in every ocean and sea in the world. He raised my father until he entered school and went to live with his parents. I had a newspaper article that Ethelyn gave me from a local newspaper in Svelvik which showed a picture of Oscar and Amalia and congratulated them on their passing their eightieth birthdays. The article also showed the name of his parents, who were also still alive and congradulates the family on their longevity. The article contained other relavent information. Oscar and Amalia immigrated to the United States in1901 with their whole relious community, the Bruder Sumpfner, (Møller, Halvorsen, Jacobsen families). They were seeking religious freedom. They entered through Ellis Island where the authorities changed the family name to Miller. The community first settled in Milwaukee, Wisconsin then moved to Mattoon. Oscar and Åmalia's daughter Esther was born on 19 July 1902; their son, Harry Arthur was born July 27, 1904, both in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Their son, Stanley was born on 5 October 1905. Oscar and Åmalia bought a farm on Cherry Lane in Mattoon, Shawno County, Wisconsin where my father, Harry Oscar Miller was born. Oscar died suddenly of heart failure while visiting his son, Harry Arthur at the farm (hwy 49 and route O) between Wittenberg and Eland. The family remembered it as a warm sunny day. My father, Harry Oscar Miller, is buried next to his grandparents, and their daughter, Esther in the Woodlawn cemetery.
