Biography
Paul Crocker probably was born about 1730 in Massachusetts, based on his marriage in 1750.
Paul Crocker married Lydia Austin on 4 June 1750 in Lunenberg, Worcester, Massachusetts. According to the register, they were both from Lunenburg.[1] "Purpose of marriage between Paul Crocker and Lydia Austin both of Lunenburg was entered April the 12th 1750." [2]
Paul and Lydia Crocker resided in Lunenburg after their marriage but relocated to Nova Scotia. On 12 April 1760, Paul Crocker, cooper of Lunenburg with wife Lydia relinquishing right of dower, in consideration of £53.6.8, conveyed to Thomas Sparhawk, gentleman of Lunenburg, property in Lunenburg consisting of a mansion house and cooper shop on one-quarter acre.[3] Paul was assessed for taxes in Granville in 1770.[4] Paul and Lydia were in Granville, Nova Soctia about twenty-five years. They returned to Lunenburg by 1 February 1784 when they were admitted to the church in Lunenburg from the church in Granville, Nova Scotia.
On 20 January 1784, Paul Crocker, gentleman of Lunenburg, for £13.6.8, purchased five acres in Lunenburg from Josiah Bailey. On 22 January 1784, Paul purchased from Moses Ritter for £360 four parcels in Lunenburg containing 120 acres.[5]
After their return to Lunenburg, Paul filled important civic functions including school committee from 1784 to 1786, selectman in 1786, and captain of the militia.[6] On 15 October 1787, Paul Crocker leased to the town of Lunenburg 432 square feet of his property for a schoolhouse. On 30 March 1812, Paul Crocker sold the farm on which he was then living to the inhabitants of Lunenburg for $100.[7]
In the 1790 United States census, Paul Crocker was living in Lunenburg, Massachusetts. His household consisted of one male over 16 (him), two males under 16, and two females.[8]
Paul Crocker's second wife was the widow Mary Faulkner Hovey whom he married on 15 March 1796.[9]
On 15 June 1812, Paul Crocker of Lunenburg was ordered to jail in Worcester for failure to pay a debt of $61.27 to Thomas Whitney of Shirley. Money and personal estate were taken to settle the debt which was satisfied on 24 September 1812.[10]
In the 1800 and 1810 United States census, Paul Crocker was living in Lunenberg, Massachusetts. His household consisted of a male over 45 and a female over 45, presumably him and his wife.[11][12] (Note: "Over 45 years" was the upper category in the census.)
Paul Crocker "of Lunenberg" died 24 April 1814. The probate records for Worcester, Massachusetts record his will being probated on 12 Apr 1815, with the proceeds to go to his widow Mary Crocker. No children are mentioned.[13]
Paul Crocker did not leave a will and his estate entered probate 17 May 1814 with David Kilbourn as administrator at the request of widow Mary. Personal estate was $179.62 and real estate $1,883.50. The dower was set off to widow Mary on 21 January 1816. A portion of real estate was sold at auction to raise $121.05 needed to pay debts of the estate.[14]
