About Captain Samuel Allen, Sr.
“He owned roughly 750 acres on the east bank of the Manasquan River, extending from Osborn Island three miles up the river. He was a Captain in the Monmouth County militia; much tradition exists about his Revolutionary War exploits in the area. In 1927 a monument in his honor was placed by descendants along the west side of highway NJ-35, about 0.2 mile north of Riverview Drive, on a large tract formerly owned by Samuel. A bronze plaque indicates the stone marks the spot ‘where Capt. Allen executed six tories and their chief.” His activities were described in the ‘Army Navy Journal (New York), 15 July 1876’ also in Francis T. Miller, ‘The Journal of America History (1909), 3:297,’ and in the ‘Red Bank Register,’ 19 February 1959.” From "NJ Graveyard and Gravestone Inscriptions Locators, Monmouth County," compiled by Edward J. Raser, publ. by Genealogical Society of NJ, 2002, pp. 305, 309.
