Biography
Birth
According to Lucius Botlwood's 1863 Hadley family genealogy, Samuel Church was born in Hadley on 19 August 1667.[1]
Samuel was the son of Samuel Church and his wife, Mary, who was probably the daughter of Josiah Churchill. He was the grandson of Richard and Anne Church of Hartford and Hadley.[1]
Samuel was the brother of:
Mary Church, 1665 – 1700, married Samuel Smith;[1]
Richard Church, 1669 – slain by Indians 15 October 1696, married Sarah Bartlett;[1]
Mehitable Church, 1672, married Nehemiah Dickinson, died 1748;[1]
Josiah Church 10 April 1673;[1]
Jonah Church twin of Josiah, 1674 – ;
Joseph Church, 1678 – 1721;[1]
Benjamin Church, 1680[1] – 1755;
John Church, Ensign, born 24 January 1682[1] – 1751;
First marriage and children
Samuel married first Abigail Harrison on 7 July 1692. Abigail died on 7 September, 1717.[1] Samuel and Abigail had children:
Samuel, 1692 – 28 Apr 1703
Martha, 23 Sep 1694 – , married John White 5 Jan 1715;
Abigail born 25 December 1696, married Samuel Warner, 7 May 1723
a child, born and died 16 June 1699
Richard Church, 20 Sep 1700 –
Nathaniel Church, 7 Feb 1704 – 1780
Samuel Church, 21 Aug 1706 – 1785
Experience Church, 2 Feb 1710 –, married Joseph Wright 14 Jun 1733
A 1914 Church family genealogical history provides the same dates of marriage and the same dates of birth of the children but omits the first Samuel and the unnamed child born and died in 1699.[2] However, the data provided by this Church family genealogy is suspect as it repeated the claims of Gustave Anjou, established as fraudulent, regarding the origins of the Church family.
Another source documenting the children of Samuel and Abigail (Harrison) Church is Amherst genealogical records.[3] This source lists Samuel, born in 1706, Richard, Nathaniel, Abigail, Experience and Martha. The document provides no information about the date of birth of these last 5 children. However, some genealogical databases cite this source as documenting a 1714 year of birth of Experience[4] and a 1716 year of birth of Martha.[5] This appears to be based on the assumption that the source lists the children in order of birth and that there was a 2 year age interval between children.
Second marriage
Samuel married second Abigail Strong on 12 August 1720, who when widowed by Samuel's death in 1737, married Ebenezer Chapin on 12 October 1738.[1] Abigail was the daughter of Samuel Strong and Esther Clapp.[6] Samuel and Abigail had children:
Joseph Church, 28 Jan 1728 – 1819;[1]
The Deerfield Massacre
During the Queen Anne's War, Samuel Church was a 'Militia Man', The English Puritans were fighting against the joint forces of the French and Native Americans. In the early morning of February 29, 1704, Lt. de Rouville led his force of approx. 300, against about 70 colonist. The French and the Indians raided the town, burning and killing men, women and children. Some escaped, some were taken captive. Samuel Church was wounded defending the town.[7]
Deeded land to his son Nathaniel
Samuel Church deeded 62 acres to his son Nathaniel Church. 5 September 1726 a certain parcel of land lying and being in the 1st division of Woodlots East of the Town of Hadley containing 62 acres so it more or less, as it is bounded East on the highway; West on Common Land, North on land that was formally Joseph Church’s, South on the highway[8]
Death
Samuel Church died about 1737[1] and is buried in Old Hadley Cemetery, Hadley, Hampshire County, Massachusetts.[9]
