About Captain Samuel Jervois
Capt. Samuel Jervois was a Cromwellian soldier who settled in Co.Cork c. 1650.
His place of birth is unknown but most likely southern England. He may have been a descendant of the family of Gervaise le mercer of Exeter -with whom he shared similar arms.
The first record of him is as commander of a troop of horse in the Parliamentary Army of the West in 1644 under the joint command of Sir William Waller and Sir Arthur Hazlerigg. In 1645 he was commander of a troop of Kentish horse.
He was sent to Ireland in 1647 to reinforce the army of Lord Inchiquin in Munster, and again in 1649 under the command of Col. Robert Phayre.
In 1650 he became a member of the Cork garrison but divided his time between serving in Ireland and Barnstaple in Devon where he married and began a family.
He married Lattis Wescombe of Barnstaple on the 24th August 1651. She died in 1655.
On the 22 May 1654 he was granted 2506 pantation acres in Co.Cork and Wexford.
He married secondly in 1669, Martha, dau and heiress of Capt. Joseph Salmon of Glandore Castle, Co.Cork.
Capt. Samuel Jervois built Brade / Braad House at Leap, Co.Cork, for his son Joseph c.1680.
