About Joseph Jervois, of Brade
Joseph Jervois was the younger son of Capt. Samuel Jervois and Lattis Wescombe and inherited Brade estate from his father.
Joseph Jervois of Brade House, Leap, Co.Cork, Sovereign of Clonakilty, m. 1680, Elizabeth, dau of Capt John Freke of Bandon and d. 1737, leaving issue.
Joseph Jervois acquired land at Castledonovan in 1696: Deed of Lease dated 22nd April 1693 from Sir John Mead of Ballintober, Co. Cork to Nathaniel and Charles Evanson of lands of Castledonovan and other lands in Co. Cork, with endorsements Nathaniel Evanson to Charles Evanson 9th April 1694 and Charles Evanson to Joseph Jervois 25th January 1696 (original). Irish Land Commission Record No CBD9628, Box No. 5116.
Joseph was appointed a Justice of the Peace for County Cork and in 1698, together with his brother Samuel, he leased the lands of Towmacdermod and Malagow from Daniel O'Donovan of Banelaghan (Bawnlahan). This document is also in the Registry of Deeds, Dublin, and bears both his signature and his seal of six ostrich feathers. Prominent in affairs of Clonakilty. The lands concerned are both in the neighbouring parish of Drinagh and total about 524 acres. Planted woodland which Smith in 1750 commented favourably on.
His will was dated 14 June and proved 8 Sept. 1737.
