About Captain Thomas Hungerford, of Rathbarry
Captain Thomas is progenitor of the Irish and Australian Hungerford families.
He settled in Co. Cork where he married Mary/Marie May in 1640. http://www.corkpastandpresent.ie/genealogy/gillmansindextomarriagel...
In 1647 he accompanied Col. Sir Edward Hungerford on his expedition to Ireland. Ref: Montgomery-Massingberd, Hugh. Burke's Irish Family Records, London, U.K, Burke's Peerage Ltd, 1976.
Capt. Thomas Hungerford is believed to be descended from Sir Walter, 1st Baron Hungerford of Farleigh Castle via the Hungerfords of Down Ampney House in Gloucestershire. Genealogical evidence of his exact line of descent is yet to be found.
He may have been the son of Fulke Hungerford d.1620 and Avis Ivy, as suggested by a letter he wrote in 1675 from Rathbarry to Robert Southwell, of Kinsale, in which mentions he refers to his "cozen Southwell" . The only known connection being through the Ivy-Hyde-Gore families. http://archiver.rootsweb.ancestry.com/th/read/HUNGERFORD/1999-02/09...
He is often recorded as the son of Richard Hungerford and his cousin Anne (dau. of Fulke Hasslewood Esq. of Wick Burnell Manor by his second wife Dorothy Hungerford) who married in 1629. However, he would then only have been 11 years old or younger when he married in 1640.
Both suggested father candidates (Fulke and Richard) are believed to have been sons of Anthony Hungerford who married Israel, dau of Vincent Goddard in 1575.
Capt. Thomas Hungerford was recorded as owner of Croaghna and Gortngrenane (Rathbarry area) in the 1659 Census (population 2 English and 13 Irish). He purchased considerable estates in the Roscarbery area.
He purchased Rathbarry Castle from Edward Williams on the 28th October 1674. His son Richard left Rathbarry in 1691 and occupied the Island of Inchidoney, Clonakilty.
Capt. Thomas Hungerford died c. 1680 / 1681 and is buried in Roscarberry Cathedral where he is commemorated with a marble plaque.
