Capt Thomas Lucas arrived in Va about 1641 from Surrey, Eng. He was one of the early settlers to Va. Records show he patented lands in Gloucester Co, Virginia, as early as 1645 in which he is styled as Thomas Lucas, Gentleman. He was Burgess of Rappahannock Co, Virginia where he settled in 1657 or 1658; was a Justice and occupied many offices of trust and distinction. He is believed to have been of the same family as Sir Thomas Lucas, Justice of Surrey and Middlesex, and a descendant of Baron Lucas of Crudwell, Eng, of the 24th Century. He is said to have been a man of wealth, for in his will he leaves family jewels of diamond rings and pearl necklaces. (See Amer of Gentle Birth by Pittman & Walker vol 1, p 68.) This Capt Thomas Lucas was closely associated with Colonel John Catlett and Ralph Rowzee in bringing persons to Va "to inhabit," in this new colony and for this they were awarded a great deal of land. Captain Lucas mar first in Eng and records show he brought his wife, his son T! homas Lucas, Jr., and a dau Mary to Va. He later mar Mrs. Margaret Upton, widow of Capt John Upton of Rappahannock Co, Virginia. (See Amer of Gentle Birth vol 1, p 68.)

Old Rappahannock or Lancaster County, Virginia. On 10 April 1657, a marriage agreement was discovered between Captain Thomas Lucas, the Elder of Rappahannock in Virginia, Gentleman, Col. More Fantleroy and Captain William Underwood of the county aforesaid on - - in consideration of a marriage (God Willing) shortly to be solemnized between the said Thomas Lucas and Margaret Upton. The bond for the marriage was for the sum of 12,000 pounds of tobacco to be executed by Col. More Fantleroy and William Underwood.
