Captain Ramsay's first wife was Jane, the daughter of Patrick Cruickshank of Stracathro, Esq. Together they had two children, Catherine and William. His second wife was Margaret Burnett, the daughter of Sir Robert Burnett of Leys, Bart. She and Captain Ramsay were the parents of Thomas Ramsay.
It should be noted that a granite fountain was erected at Banchory, dedicated to the memory of Captain Ramsay. He was the nephew of the Very Reverend Dean Ramsay of Edinburgh, and succeeded to the estates of his grand-uncle, General William Barnett.
