About Carl Friedrich Pitzer, SV/PROG
Extensive research into the Dutch East Indies Archives and Research records ‘Towards A New Age of Partnership’ (TANAP) shows the following.
Sometime during 1743 CARL FRIEDRICH PITZER enlisted with the Vereenigde Oostindische Compagnie; VOC; (English: Dutch East India Company, officially the United East India Company). Upon enlistment his name was recorded as Carel Fredrik Pitsers, soldier from Tangermunde.
The date of his enlistment is not recorded however on Saturday, 30 March 1743 he boarded the ship Loverendaal, which departed from Rammenkens (Vlissingen), under command of Captain Cornelis Mangelaar.
The following is recorded about the ship, its crew and the journey to Cabo de Goede Hoop (Cape of Good Hope):
On departure from Rammenkens (Vlissingen) there were 140 seafarers, 71 Soldiers and two craftsmen.
The Loverendaal called at Duins (the Downs) on the south-eastern coast of England and laid over from 11 to 27 April 1743. Whilst there 10 seafarers deserted, one soldier died. The ship took on one seafarer and 2 soldiers became seafarers.
Enroute to Cabo de Goede Hoop (Cape of Good Hope) 14 seafarers and 7 soldiers died.
On 12 August 1743, upon arrival at Cabo de Goede Hoop (Cape of Good Hope), 9 seafarers and 8 soldiers (including Carl Friedrich Pitzer) disembarked.
According to Christoffel Coetzee de Villiers in his book ‘Geslacht - Register der Oude Kaapsche Familiën’ published 1894 Carl Friedrich Pitzer arrived at the Cape of Good Hope in 1743 in service of the ‘Oost Indische Compagnie’. However, in Dutch East Indies Archives and Research records ‘Towards A New Age of Partnership’ (TANAP) it is recorded that on completion of his contractual liabilities to the VOC, Carl was discharged from the Vereenigde Oostindische Compagnie; VOC, and became a vrijburger (Free Burgher) or citizen of Stellenbosch, Cabo de Goede Hoop (Cape of Good Hope) on 5 September 1747. Despite the fact that TANAP records show that he left service at ‘Azie’ (Asia) I could not find any record that he was in Asia.
He arrived from Tangermunde (Germany) in 1743 as a soldier. He was given burgher rights at Stellenbosch in 1747 and practised as a surgeon.. He and Martha Pitzer had 8 children.
