He Spent a number of years in the Norwegian Navy. He joined at the age of 15 and eventually rose to the rank of Captain. From 1863 to 1868 he was a deputy surveyor of customs and excise at Moss in the county of Ostfold.
When his three nephews, Carl, Jens and Jacob went to America. He gave the three a book on how to learn to speak English and inscribed it to them. The book is currently in the possession of Dan Albrechtson.
