About Carl Laemmle, jr.

https://old.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GRid=8701 Motion Picture Producer, Studio Executive. The son of Universal Studios founder Carl Laemmle, he supervised the production of short subjects as a teen and was appointed President of the company on his 21st birthday. He initiated a program to upgrade the quality of the studio's films and one of his first projects, "All Quiet On the Western Front" (1930), won an Academy Award for Best Picture. Universal's legendary cycle of horror films ("Frankenstein", "Dracula", "The Mummy", "The Invisible Man") also began under his tenure, and he gave the green light to such classics as the musical "Show Boat" (1936) and the screwball comedy "My Man Godfrey" (1936). But his lavish spending drove the studio into near-bankruptcy and in 1936 the entire Laemmle family was ousted from Universal in a hostile takeover. After an unsuccessful stint as an independent producer, Laemmle faded from the Hollywood scene. (bio by: Bobb Edwards)
