Carl Warwick Lewis

Carl and Mabel were very active in the Presbyterian Church. He had a fine tenor voice and did a great deal of singing. Mabel played the piano and they saw to it that all their children studied music. Carl W. played the cornet, Dorothy the cornet and piano, Kathryn the violin, piano, and organ, and James the cornet.

They believed in a close family association. They had a family orchestra and when they traveled they took the whole family. In the summer of 1912 they took the family to visit in Vermont. They traveled via train to New Orleans, boat to New York, boat to Albany, NY, and train to Vermont, where the family made headquarters with Carl’s sister Sarah on Putnum’s Island (now Garden Island). In 1917 they took the family to Vermont by train via Vancouver, BC, to Montreal, Quebec to Vermont. On the way home they stopped at Niagara Falls and Salt Lake.

Carl got his first car in 1913, a Ford Model T. In 1915 he bought an underslung model Regal, and in 1917 a seven-passenger Chalmers.

While in Modesto, they lived on Park Avenue most of the time (#115-#119-#227 Park Avenue).
