About Carl Johan Olivecrona

CARL JOHAN HANSSON BREHM OLIVECRONA

Born 26 October 1854, the son of Hans August Paulus Olivecrona and Charlotta Lofqvist. Both of his parents died when Carl was very young, his father dying when he was 6 years old. Hans August Olivecrona cared very much for his son and he asked his younger brother Knut (S.R.D.K. Olivecrona, who was 11 years younger than Hans), to look after Carl when he died and he left 300 pounds to Carl in his will. Carl's uncle Knut did indeed look after him and became his Guardian. As a boy, Carl was known as Carl Johan Hansson

and he lived with and was looked after by a Mrs Lychou. She and Knut Olivecrona were responsible for Carl receiving a very good education (Carl could for instance, speak six languages fluently).
On 10 June 1871, Knut Olivecrona visited Mrs Lychou to arrange for Carl to go to sea, to perhaps follow in his father's footsteps. Carl was 17 years old at that time. After eight years, Carl left the sea and he worked for a merchant in Stockholm who was at that time, the British Vice Consul. Carl later operated his own business in Stockholm in the oil trade and on 24 October 1885, he was appointed Royal British Vice Consul in Stockholm. At that time he had the name Carl Johan Hansson Brehm. Carl continued to have a close relationship with his uncles and cousins and he visited often and was usually invited to family parties. He was described by the Olivecrona family as a nice person.
In 1889, Carl changed his surname to Olivecrona, his natural father's name. He was assisted in this by his uncle, S. R. D. Knut Olivecrona who, in order to officially establish his parentage, arranged for Carl to be listed in Gabriel Anrep's 1890 Calendar of Swedish Nobles, where on page 688, he is listed as the son of Hans August Paulus Olivecrona and Charlotta Löfqvist .
In 1854 he left his positon as British Vice Consul and emigrated to New Zealand, where he became Charles John Olivecrona to merge more easily into the New Zealand society. He went into a business partnership with H. E. McDonald as wool merchants but also dealing in oil products.
On 2/6/1897 in Nelson, he married Flora Cooper McDonald. They had five children.
Eric Edward Detlof born 17/6/1898 at Belmont Nena Elisa born 6/3/1900 at Blenheim

Cecil Henri August born 16/4/1901 at Blenheim

Charles Malcolm Bartlett born 23/1/1903 at Lower Hutt

Elsa Kathleen born 10/4/1908 at Christchurch

Flora Olivecrona died at Lower Hutt on 4th October 1912 aged 35 years , from a thyroid problem which was not so readily treated in those days.

Following this, the family moved to and grew up on a farm in Levin.

Charles John Olivecrona died at Levin on 3th December 1939. In his last years he suffered from glaucoma and had become blind. During those years he lived with and was looked after by his daughter Nena.
