About Lotte Freund
First name also as: Lotte, Carlota, Karlotta
She was a successful portrait photographer, and many Freund family photographs from the period are by her. She also knew, and possibly worked with, the commercial and fashion photographer Yva (Else Simon), as there are several portrait photographs of her parents by Yva.
25 Feb 1939 -- She is #5 on Spanish quota, along with Kurt’s family. However, she does not leave Berlin with them. My father never explains why, and may not have known.
[Her Barcelona birth explains Carlotta's quota card; previously, it was curious as to why she had the same number as her brother Kurt's family, whereas their mother Alice did not.]
1949 -- Gerald Freund going back to Berlin to search for Aunt Lotte. Finding a woman superintendant in building, who claimed she left with no forwarding address. Other tenant comes downstairs to say it's not true, she's lying. Lotte was put out during a roundup intentionally so she'd be picked up by the Nazis. No trace of her has ever been found.
“His [Kurt%E2%80%99s] sister [Lotte / Carlotta Freund] was younger. She became an excellent photographer and developed a small photography business during the inter-war period. But she never rose to any special heights as a photographer and she remained in Berlin when we left, when we emigrated.”
Official records show that she was deported to Auschwitz, although no record exists of her as a prisoner. It is likely she died during transport or was murdered immediately upon arrival.
