Pioneer, editor, writer, educator, Dr. Carlton Fordis Culmsee, 88, died peacefully, Thursday, April 29, 1993 in Logan, Utah.

He was born September 18, 1904, the son of Ludwig Alfred and Clara Belia Hansen Culmsee. He gave the Valedictory address at BYU and promptly married Edna Mae Ball, June 5, 1932 in Provo, Utah. She died July 11, 1976. They had one son, Ralph, who died in 1956. Carlton married Aileen Leatham Swift Barker in 1978.His family were settlers in the Escalante Desert between Lund and Milford beginning in 1912, where he grew up. He graduated from high school at BAC in Cedar City and was made principal and teacher at a one-room school while still 17. Meanwhile he was homesteading a half section of land.

He went on to gain master's and doctor's degrees. At Brigham Young University he became a professor of Journalism and the Director of Extension.

He served in World War II from 1942-1945, gaining rank of Lt. Commander in Naval Air.

For 25 years he was a professor of English, Journalism and American Studies and Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences at Utah State University, interrupted by a one year stint at the National Chegchi University of Taiwan.

He is survived by his wife and her (Carlton's "Honorary") daughter, Diane Patton and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death in 1990 by another Honorary daughter, Carolyn B. Talbot.

Funeral services will be held Monday, May 3, 12 noon, in the Logan 24th Ward Chapel, 1260 North 1600 East. Friends may call at the Allen-Hall Mortuary, Sunday evening from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. and at the ward one hour prior to services. Burial will be in the Logan City Cemetery.
