Carmen the seventh child of Isaac and Gracie Buter was born in Lawrence County, Mississippi Territory a short time after the family arrived from Tennessee where his brother,Chapman was born. It is believed at Carmen lived in Lawrence County, until he married Miss Martha Ann Purvis, daughter of Billie Purvis, of White Oak. Carmen and Martha had twelve children with nine reaching maturity. Three daughters, Burnette, Adeline and Julia Ann, died at early ages.

Carmen and his family lived for a number of years in Scott County where several of his children were born. Later they moved to Rankin County, near Brandon where he died in 1871. Carmen and Martha died within 30 minutes of each other. They are buried in the northwest corner of Dry Creek Cemetery with a new single headstone for both.

Carmen Myers and Martha Ann Purvis Myers are buried in two coffins together in a single box in the Dry Creek Cemetery in Rankin County. He died of pneumonia and she had always prayed that she would not outlive him. When he quit breathing, she went upstairs and when they found her 30 minutes later she was dead of congestion of the brain. Two minor children were left orphaned, Lawrence, aged 12 years, and Samuel Robert, age 10. They were reared by Eliza Tullos Dukes [ sister to Sarah Frances Tullos Myers] and her husband, Jim Dukesh.
